How To Cite References

Citing references is important especially when you're writing an academic paper.  There are 3 citation styles you can use for your bibliography. I will try to discuss each style on separate entries but for this entry, I will give you an overview of how to use these styles. The right citation method to use would usually depend on the kind of paper you are writing or the preferences of your instructor or institution that you're going to submit the paper to. What ever the case is, here are some easy tips you can follow when making your reference page.

Citing Reference Books

MLA Style
Author#1 Last Name, First Name/s, and Author #2 First Name, Last Name. Book Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, Date of Publication.
*for books of more than 3 authors/ editors, you can include all the names and follow the format above or just include Author#1 [put a comma after the name and et al.]

APA Style
Author#1 Last Name, First Name Initials & Author#2 Last Name, First Name Initials (year of publication). Book Title. Place of Publication: Publisher.

Chicago/Turabian Style
Author#1 Last Name, First Name/s, and Author #2 First Name, Last Name. Book Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, year of publication.
*for more than 3 authors, just use the last names of the first 2 authors [write and others after the last names of the second author]

Naming Your Reference Page
  • MLA style uses the title Works Cited for its reference page.
  • APA style uses the title Reference List.
  • Chicago/Turabian style lets you use the titles Bibliography, Works Cited or Reference list for your reference page depending on the kind of citing system you choose to use. These 2 systems are:
    • Notes and Bibliography
    • In-text author-date citations and reference list.
